Aussie Rules in Ghana
Although there are no organised matches, teams or competitions in Ghana at this stage, there are some good signs that this might change in the not too distant future.
And this is due to the efforts of a Melbourne University (Trinity College) student and VAFA player, Tim Foster, who taught at a local primary school in the rural town of Dawhenya (east of Accra) in early 2005.

After that first visit, Tim returned to the town a few times bringing with him a few rubber footballs. And the local kids loved them. According to an interview with WorldFootyNews, Tim said that "An Australian couple had taught at the school only a few months before me so they already had a few Bunnings warehouse footies lying around the school storeroom. Some of the kids could kick really well, no doubt due to their soccer background".
And they love the way the ball bounces in different directions!

He also states that due to a soccer friendly between the Socceroos and Ghana held in November 2006, and the battles between Jeff Fenech and Ghanian hero Azumah Nelson, the children have an enthusiastic interest about Australia and its culture.

Most of the kick-to-kick sessions take place informally during and after school times, so the potential to conduct clinics, such as those held in other parts of Africa, promises great potential.

Heres hoping some existing Aussie Rules clubs, and businesses with a few spare dollars, will take the 'bit between the teeth' and invest in the future of Aussie Rules in Ghana. And not just leave all the work to a few dedicated individuals such as Tim Foster.

MORE GOOD NEWS!
In 2009 AFL club the Western Bulldogs announced that they were in talks with Azumah Nelson regarding the introduction of Australian rules football at the Azumah Nelson Foundation (AZNEF) Sports Academy.

Azumah was quoted as saying "Once we become familiar with handling the oval shaped ball, I am sure that Ghana will produce many champions for the AFL Clubs in Australia".

The Bulldogs have also stated that they may travel to Ghana to visit the AZNEF Sports Academy in future

Just another small step on the long road to showing the world that there really is an exciting alternative to Sooker & Thugby!
